ABOUT BRENT BECKER Born in the suburbs of Chicago in 1979, Brent W. Becker has devoted much of his life and time to the visual and performing arts. After joining a local drum and bugle corps at the age of 12, Brent quickly discovered a talent and passion for the marching arts. His drum corps experience includes performing in the hornlines of some of the finest competitive units, including: The Guardsmen (Schaumburg, IL); the Phantom Regiment organization (Rockford, IL); and the Cavaliers (Rosemont, IL). He has also performed with the Kilties (Racine, WI) and the Spirit of America National Honor Band (Boone, NC). Shortly after beginning his marching career, Brent began to dabble with uniform design, developing new uniforms for some of his favorite corps. However, this hobby took a back seat to Brent’s other artistic and musical pursuits. After completing his undergraduate program in Studio Art at Bradley University (Peoria, IL), Brent received a Master’s Degree in Art Education from Northern Illinois University (DeKalb, IL). Currently, Brent teaches secondary visual arts in the Clark County School District (Las Vegas, NV). As a visual artist, Brent has worked in a wide variety of media and themes. His work has been shown in diverse settings, including an invited exhibition and lecture at Kishwaukee Community College (Malta, IL). Recently, Brent has been working in ceramics to develop primitive hand-built musical instruments. While his academic pursuits did not delve into fashion design, Brent’s experiences and related artistic skills have laid the groundwork for his success as a uniform designer. In the summer of 2006, Brent began sharing a series of exciting uniform designs via the Internet. This generated a great deal of interest for his design work within the marching arts community and led to several design commissions from a variety of drum corps, bands, color guards, and indoor percussion ensembles. Within a year after the release of his on-line portfolio, Stanbury Uniforms produced Brent’s radical new design for the Blue Stars (LaCrosse, WI), a Division 1 drum corps and 2007 DCI Semi-Finalist. Since joining the “Stanbury Family” in the spring of 2007, Brent has developed innovative new looks for the Capitol Sound (Madison, WI) and Hawthorne Gold (Hawthorne, CA), both of which will hit the field in 2008. He has also developed several marching band uniforms with Stanbury, including an exciting new look for The Timber Creek Regiment (Timber Creek High School - Orlando, FL). Philosophically speaking, Brent thinks, “The combination of performance excellence and a great uniform can achieve tremendous visual impact and yield competitive success.” He feels that, “Great uniforms should possess great energy, embodying the essence of musical and visual performance.” Brent believes that creating a unique and reliable visual identity must be placed at the forefront of contemporary uniform design, stating that, “It is important for new uniforms to possess elements that reflect a unit’s unique heritage while simultaneously moving design and visual effect forward. I feel that great visual impact can be achieved without sacrificing identity.” In addition to teaching, Brent maintains a design studio in Las Vegas. He hopes that his continued design work will have a positive and lasting impact on the appearance of marching and pageantry units. |
