Meet your Alabama Consultants

James Thompson

James Thompson has a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Livingston University, a Masters of Music Education degree from the University of Alabama, and an "AA" Certificate in Administration/Supervision from Auburn University. He also studied innovations in education for one year as a Ford Scholar and did graduate course work at Seton Hall University and New York University.

He has directed bands at Thomasville, Chatom, and Butler in Alabama and was for 23 years the director of the Benjamin Russell High School "Pride of Alexander City Band." The band has received many national, regional, area and local honors and awards. The most notable are: selected by audition, twice as the State of Alabama representative in the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade in Washington D.C., chosen as one of two bands to represent the United States in the International Band Contest in Mexico City, Mexico, named "Grand Champs" of the Festival of Champions concert competition in Panama City, Florida and chosen twice, by audition, as the featured band in the Disney World Main Street Parade and America On Parade Show.

In addition to his experience as band director, Mr. Thompson has been a member of the Mobile and Meridian Symphony Orchestras and has managed his own "Big Band."

James has served in Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, New Jersey, Washington D.C., Pennsylvania and throughout Alabama as clinician, adjudicator, guest conductor and speaker.

He has served three terms as an active Elder and 25 years as Music Director of the First Presbyterian Church of Alexander City.

James is a member of Phi Beta Mu National Music Fraternity and other local, state, and national professional organizations.

He is married to the former Sue Strickland of Tuscaloosa and they have two daughters and one son. Their son, Scott Thompson, is also a band director and is the director of bands at Clay-Chalkville High School in Jefferson County, Alabama.
